Let’s face it: donor and consumer behavior has shifted in the last 5 years.

The acute years of COVID-19 turned many into homebodies, changing spending habits and event attendance patterns alike. Add in digital-messaging fatigue, evolving demographic preferences, and current political and economic upheavals, and it can be hard to know who and where your target audiences are—let alone how to reach them effectively.

This is borne out by the data, too: The Fundraising Effectiveness Project’s most recent report showed donor count and donor retention were down significantly from 2023’s numbers across the non-profit sector—continuing a years-long trend of declining retention and engagement.

Customer behavior in the retail sector has shifted in similar ways, and businesses will need to adjust their strategies accordingly.

McKinsey’s June 2024 “State of the Consumer” white paper recommends an approach focused on audience understanding and personalization:

“Rather than putting consumers in predefined—and often outdated—boxes, companies should focus on microtargeting to build a richer understanding of consumer preferences… Through microtargeting, companies can engage high-potential consumer groups—for example, younger people in emerging markets or wealthy aging individuals—and provide personalized experiences that build brand love and loyalty and propel future purchases.”

These changes in donor/customer preference and behavior make targeted engagement work even more essential. These days, organizational budgets are strained, and you need the most bang for your proverbial buck.
